Research

Our research focuses on basic and clinical aspects of stroke, primarily on focal cerebral ischemia. Stroke is the second largest cause of death and the largest cause of disability in the western world. We aim to develop and test novel pharmacological agents effective in the acute phase of stroke. We work with both neuroprotective and thrombolytic agents. We try to influence stroke treatment and its major complications such as brain oedema and blood-brain barrier (BBB) damage, and hemorrhagic formation. We also study the dynamics of the BBB damage after transient occlusion of the middle cerebral artery. The vast majority of our research studies are utilising magnetic resonance imaging.
